XL scale nickel wounds?

Sign in to disble this ad
Looking to try some new strings for my Ken Lawrence 5 string with an 35" scale. Because the strings go through the body of this bass, many 35" scale strings are too short. I usually use DR's but string through the bridge and I have to trim all the silk off the B and E strings over the nut. Anyone have any suggestions for nickel wound strings long enough to go through the body that don't have a tapered B string?

DR's shouldn't give you a problem going through the bridge... IIRC, the standard length is about 37" inches, which should give you more than enough room. And all the DR sets I've used didn't have any silk on them...

Are you sure you're talking about DR's? Sorry to sound like a smarta**, but I'm just a bit confused here.

Otherwise, I would think the 'super long scale' versions of the XL's would do the trick.

Me too. All the DR strings I've used fit my 35" scale STB Lakland just fine, and don't have any silk on them.

Other choices would be D'Addario extra long scale strings. Most placed don't stock them, but most of D'Addario's long scale sets are available in an extra-long size too.

D'Addario nickels should do the trick. The extra longs are.... umm... extra long!

Yeah, your'e right on the DR's. No silk, but a bit to short on the B string. I used GHS Super Steels for a while and those fit great, but they are really bright. Trying to find a warmer string as this bass is fairly bright already. I'll have to check out tthe D'Addario's.

+1 I had a great deal of difficulty getting strings that would fit my Lakland 55-94. D'Addario Soft Super Longs get the job done.
