XLs vs Hi-Beams

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi there,

I just had my new PJ Fender duff bass set up at a shop (PU swapped for EMGs too), and they were out of my trusty and great sounding d'addario XL 170s/165's (nickle steel on hex core), so I took a chance and had them set it up with DR hibeam lites 100-40 (steel on round core) that were on hand. i actually really dig these strings, but don't know if i am ready for a change. Maybe its the round core i dig.

So gimmie your 2 cents. Who has thoughts on these two strings head to head? Especially people who have used both. I have played other DR strings before (i think Lo-riders or something) and didn't like em at all, as well as i don't like any coated string or the d'addarrio stainless pro steels. so don't say try the black beauties, etc.

so specifiacally XLs versus hibeams or maybe hi-beams versus fatbeams. how are the fat-beams in comparison to XLs or hibeams?

I've got both on my basses. I think the XL's sound a bit more broken in than the DR's right out of the box. Otherwise, they're both good strings.

DR Hi-beams are simply the best roundwound strings I've played. D'addario XLs sound great when new, but they die so quickly (IMO and IME).

i second the high beams. I do think there is definitely a break in period with them though.
