| I've never been one to clean strings, but I am a chemist.
Chemically speaking, xylene is not a denatured alcohol (all alcohol's end in an -ol, like methanol, ethanol, isopropanol (rubbing alcohol), etc...) its an aromatic hydrocarbon. Though, both groups can be used as solvents.
So, yeah, it could probably work for cleaning strings but I wouldn't personally do it.
