Yes..... Another Flats question

Sign in to disble this ad
I've searched but can't find an answer. I've been playing ernie ball super slinkys on my jazz bass forever, but lately I've been wanting to try some flat wound strings. I'm pretty set on chromes, but I don't know what gauge to try. I understand there are some tension differences that might force me to adjust the truss rod and I really don't want to do that. Where do I start? Thanks

Whether you try to go a gauge down or keep the same gauge, im pretty sure that the tension wont be an exact mach and that you will have to adjust your truss rod!

Just do it, its no big deal!

use the light gauge on a jazz bass, I tried the medium guage a few years ago and the A string did not seem right and gave me some buzz when playing the string open. Also get the the long scale light chromes, on a jazz strung thru the body the E string is a little short and you have to cut back the taperwound.

Definitely start out with the Regular Light Gauge. You will notice the differences in tension between the Slinkys and the Chromes. Not good or bad, but you will notice. TI Jazz Flats would be lower tension... closer to the Slinkys.

There's a reasonable chance your instrument will want a truss rod tweak to make it play its best. Just no getting around it.

Is there a specific reason you'd rather not do a truss rod tweak?

Yeah, TI flats have comparable tension to "regular" rounds IME. They're pricey, but A). they last forever, B). they sound luvverly, C). they get good resale value on TB.
