ZOG Shortscale Roundwound Strings?

Sign in to disble this ad
Searching here finds some mention of Zog bass strings but I didn't see where anyone has actually tried them? I have a shortscale that I want to try a bigger "E" on and ordered up a set of theirs to try. This shortscale came with a 105 and I've tried a 110 on it but don't think I'm "there" yet. Unfortunately I've not found anybody selling short scale singles bigger than a 105 - anybody know of a source? Something like a 115 or 120 would be great I think? Yah I know I can "unwind" a standard length string but I'd rather not. Thanks!

Too much bad mojo from the Zach-meister for me. You'll probably need a new nut because his secret gauges are going to be larger than the strings that came stock with your bass.

Well, kinda like the soup vendor on Seinfeld the "soup" might very well be worth the effort .

I've no problem filing out the nut as needed. Worst case if I want to go back I'll need a new nut - this bass could use a better one anyways. From his published tensions I suspect I will only have to file out the "E".

I'll let all you all know what I think of the "soup" as soon as I get to "taste" it .

Just received them - quick enough considering the website warns that they only ship out once a week. I'm pretty happy with the size of the "E" and it is the only string that I will have to drill out the hole in the bridge and file out the nut for. I'm going to honor the maker's request and not reveal the gauges - or it will be "No strings for you!" in the future . If anybody's gonna be at the GTG in RI next Saturday I'll have my Mikro strung up with them there .

EDIT> Note strikeout above (didn't need to drill the bridge). The "E" took very little nut filing to fit - I could almost use the string as a "file" to do it on my plastic nut. I carefully widened it with a welder tip cleaner I had and did use the string itself to "polish" it. The "E" alone sounds and looks just like the D'Addario XL's that came on the bass (45 65 85 105). This is a new Mikro I bought just for roundwounds - my other has been strung with Rotosound RS88 tapewounds for quite a while and it took quite a bit more work to fit those up than the ZOG's. Looking and sounding good so far. I'll fit up the rest of the strings next .

EDIT> Got them all strung up - definitely feels different with the progressive tension but not bad. It will take a little getting used to but it's certainly the tightest "E" I've ever heard on a short scale .
