buying an upright

This is my first time on this forum and I just need some advice. I played an upright bass in high school and on gigs when I was young. It's been forty years since I've even touched another bass. I would like to buy one to just fool around with at home. I looked on e-bay and saw a posting for a new Bachmeier 3/4 upright bass selling for $500 with free shipping. That's about what I'd want to pay but I don't want to spend that amount of money and be real disappointed in its sound or performance. Does anyone know anything about a Bachmeier upright bass? I know it sounds inexpensive but I'm not going to play it anywhere but at home. Any advice? Thanks.

Check the newbie links at the top of the Bass forum. And yes, you will be disappointed with the sound and performance of a mail order $500 DB.

I am sorry, I do not know this brand of bass... but the old adage :you get what you pay for: certainly holds true for basses. If you are not in a huge hurry, it might pay to give all the string shops in your area a call, and all the bass shops (Cincinnati Bass Cellar , or String Emporium in Phoenix, for examples of local stores.) When a dealer in basses knows what your level and interest are, he/she can better advise what would work best for you. An old Kay plywood is often better than a new Chinese bass for some forms of use. $500 used to be an amount that could buy you a decent instrument... not really the case anymore. If you up your limit to a few thousand, you could likely get a bass that would resell well when you outgrow it.
Good Luck!!!
Patrick

Thanks so much for your advice. I'll see what music shops are in my neck of the woods.
