...not being a "pro" the part is difficult for me to execute...maybe the answer should be..."just play what is written"...that I can understand....BUT...I think there may be
an "effect" that is created at this point in the music AND there
is a "technique" or "way" to create the "sound" ...any "help" will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, foilracer |
Right! Play the part! It'd be a big challenge to tell you how to get a sound that I cannot hear. So, as far as desired effect (by this I assume you mean the composer's and/or conductor's) please give more details... what do you think the effect is supposed to be? What has the conductor requested? Technically, for example, if the tremelo is the problem, is it getting it to be forte enough or fast enough? Or if the problem is going to pizz from arco fast enough, are you holding your bow or gripping it? What is the form you use for pizz while holding the bow? If the problem is getting all the bassists to play in rhythm, then a coaching of the section is needed. So you can see, you are a bit too vague about the problem. In fact, perhaps there is no problem? This is a raucous passage (the opening) where the "effect" as you call it, is spread out through the entire ensemble. If the brass are not together, the bassists can't really change that, given we are only playing a drone. So... hope this helps. I am sorry you sound a bit frustrated by the piece. The piece is great, with lots of extended techniques (at least at the time) for everyone. The composition is a wonderful orchestral training tool as well, for it forces a player to come up with the technique to realize the composer's dream.
Best!
