| We are our best teachers. Observation from others helps get us pointed in the direction we want to head. Get a teacher, yes, but be your own teacher too. In jazz, especially, we need solid rhythm players. Soloing is a lower priority if you want to get work right away, and the bass-lines are fabulous music. Some of the classic players, Mingus of course, Paul Chambers, Slam Stuart, Ray Brown ... have such musical lines, that they are solos in themselves, all the time.
