how to NOT rush

I find that when I'm in the section, and we have fast scale passages, I rush like crazy, on the scales, and it sounds like a blur. I was wondering about your ideas for working on NOT rushing. What techniques, or was of practicing a passage can help me rectify this problem. Thanks a million!!!!!!!

Without sounding simplistic, you must learn to count steadily. Use a metronome when practicing and get the beat to be felt in your gut. TAP your FOOT if you need to, with the metronome, to get the beat IN your body. Then practice subdivisions of the beat without the bass ("tah" or tap).. then bring to the bass and be sure your subdivisions when playing are not "stressed" by un-rhythmical fingering or sloughing off notes. Your colleagues are likely distressed if you are pushing all the time. Working with one of them to steady it all is helpful too, rhythmical and socially.
The main thing is it needs to feel wrong, physically, to be rushing or dragging your section.
Best of luck!
Patrick
