Hi,
Bowing is either up or down, push or pull. Or in my opinion, pull-up and pull-down (right and left).

Ach! That is NOT the answer you wanted, eh?

Well, you have presented a question with myriad answers, because, frankly, "it all depends..." ... on the context and the music, the dynamic, the articulation desired, the style (era), the composer... etc. etc. So, most of the time you "lead" with a sixteenth to a dotted eighth, so up to down is powerful and clear. A hooked bowing is often required too, like down-down (dotted eighth- sixteenth); up-up (dotted eighth- sixteenth). Here the sixteenth alternates in direction - but for MOST music, should "lead" to the dotted eighth.
Hope this helps.
