things I could practice without a double bass?

Hi, the situation is as it follows: I´m a 19 year-old bass player who is actually studing classical music composition at university. The thing is that I would love to start learning double bass, but this year I´m not having any money to buy one, nor to invest on double bass classes, since I´m already paying for university and for my bass lessons. My plans are to start taking double bass lessons next year (Am I on time to start studying this beautiful instrument?), and the question is the following: is there something I could be practicing or be doing that would make me start with some advantage my classes? one thing that came to my mind was training perfect pitch, what do you think? is there some thing else I colud do? thanks for your time!

Hello there!
It is never too late to start playing/studying the bass! But you must have realistic goals so that you do not disappoint yourself if you do not meet them. Be sure to determine where you want to be, by when. For example "I want to play the Bottesini Concert no. 2 by next year" If you are a beginner, this may be unrealistic and you could easily frustrate yourself to not liking the bass. On the other hand, a lofty goal for some is just the inspiration they need to excel!! So, you must set your goals and be realistic. You should have a teacher and your own bass. Only then will you dedicate yourself to what is possible. It is okay to be frustrated with either, and change them. Have many teachers and many instruments, if you can afford them. If not, you can always learn with what you have. It is a matter of attitude. Finally, playing the piano is a great start to any musical experience. Learning perfect-pitch will not provide you with the dexterity and musical understanding that piano training will, assuming you have the time to study piano, without interfering with the time you need to spend on the bass. Piano introduces a LOT of general theory and musicality, dexterity and rhythm sense. All that you need on the bass too...
Get a fine teacher!
Best of luck!

I´m actually studying piano at university as a complement to all the theory we study there, I will try my best at it. Thanks for your advice and your wisdom.
