Hello there!
It is never too late to start playing/studying the bass! But you must have realistic goals so that you do not disappoint yourself if you do not meet them. Be sure to determine where you want to be, by when. For example "I want to play the Bottesini Concert no. 2 by next year" If you are a beginner, this may be unrealistic and you could easily frustrate yourself to not liking the bass. On the other hand, a lofty goal for some is just the inspiration they need to excel!! So, you must set your goals and be realistic. You should have a teacher and your own bass. Only then will you dedicate yourself to what is possible. It is okay to be frustrated with either, and change them. Have many teachers and many instruments, if you can afford them. If not, you can always learn with what you have. It is a matter of attitude. Finally, playing the piano is a great start to any musical experience. Learning perfect-pitch will not provide you with the dexterity and musical understanding that piano training will, assuming you have the time to study piano, without interfering with the time you need to spend on the bass. Piano introduces a LOT of general theory and musicality, dexterity and rhythm sense. All that you need on the bass too...
Get a fine teacher!
Best of luck!
