I guess this is a tough question, especially to ask you to judge your students' talent, but I just want to know what i'm up against. Here in North Dakota, we've produced about zero high schoolers who have gone to major in double bass performance since i was born. I don't get to hear the rest of the country's high schoolers, so I guess I'm kind of in over my head.

Hello,
NO, you are NOT "in over [your] head" !!
It really is quite simple. Go to my web site at the Univ of Arizona (
www.u.arizona.edu/~neher) for some information that you seek. Look for syllabus for undergraduate study.
Simply, I require an entering performance major to be able to play every major and minor scale in at least two octaves, an orchestral excerpt, a jazz tune (if so inclined), and a Baroque sonata (like Vivaldi, Marcello, de Fesch, etc.) or equivalent ... or more advanced if possible, like a Classical concerto (Hoffmeister, Sperger, Vanhal). That's it! About 15 minutes of music on CD or DVD... or live audition if you can make it to Arizona.
Hope that helps! And good luck to you!
