Tough Question on College Students

Hello, I'm a high school junior planning to audition for a few schools and planning to pursue double bass performance if possible. I'm just wondering if you could describe the level of maybe an accepted student at your university. Does the typical accepted student sound like a concert performer on their Bottesini or Koussevitzky, etc. concerto when they enter? or does it even typically sound comfortable?

I guess this is a tough question, especially to ask you to judge your students' talent, but I just want to know what i'm up against. Here in North Dakota, we've produced about zero high schoolers who have gone to major in double bass performance since i was born. I don't get to hear the rest of the country's high schoolers, so I guess I'm kind of in over my head.

Thank you

Hello,
NO, you are NOT "in over [your] head" !!
It really is quite simple. Go to my web site at the Univ of Arizona (www.u.arizona.edu/~neher) for some information that you seek. Look for syllabus for undergraduate study.
Simply, I require an entering performance major to be able to play every major and minor scale in at least two octaves, an orchestral excerpt, a jazz tune (if so inclined), and a Baroque sonata (like Vivaldi, Marcello, de Fesch, etc.) or equivalent ... or more advanced if possible, like a Classical concerto (Hoffmeister, Sperger, Vanhal). That's it! About 15 minutes of music on CD or DVD... or live audition if you can make it to Arizona.
Hope that helps! And good luck to you!
PN

Thank you. I may plan to add UA to my list to audition for, especially since finding a way to transport a bass and a car across the country isn't an audition requirement.
