Bass at UNT

Hey Lynn,
I was wondering if you could shed some light on studying jazz bass at UNT. How many new students are typically accepted into the program? It also says your required to study classical bass as well. So do you study with you and a different teacher as well?

Thanks for your time.

Hi,
Thanks for your interest in UNT. The number of jazz students accepted each year varies depending on how many people have graduated the previous year. On average there are about 24 jazz bassists in the program and the classical department has about the same. At UNT, undergraduates take 8 semesters of lessons, (4 classical then 4 jazz). Additionally, there are two semesters of Jazz Bass Fundamentals that I teach to new arrivals concurrently with your classical lessons. This is basically a group jazz lesson that meets twice a week. That way everyone gets time with me right from the beginning. Classical lessons are with a different teacher. By the time you are in private jazz lessons, you will have a great technical and conceptual foundation from both worlds.
Here is a link to a SAMPLE degree plan that shows one possible route. Please note that lessons are listed as "App Concentration" which means applied lessons on the instrument you concentrate on (double bass). http://jazz.unt.edu/sites/default/fi...umental_06.pdf
Here is a link to admission and audition information for all instruments including bass and instructions for how to apply.

Additionally I teach Advanced Improvisation III for all instruments which you will take. As you can tell, you will see me a lot at UNT.
