Watch Pete's video again, tap your feet and listen. See how he keeps solid time? Kevin also seems to keep time.
Now watch the remaining three. No offense, but none of them are maintaining any semblance of a solid rhythm. Doesn't that defeat the whole point of slap bass? It's one thing to give up a little intonation to take on a greater rhythmic role, but to sacrifice rhythm for the sake of click sounds? |

I'm no rockabilly slap bass hater. I just liked 2 of the posts, and disliked 3. Big deal.
What did you expect, that 100% of the responses would be "yay, all 5 of those posts were 100% awesome!"? |

I have heard all of those guys play with bands, and they don't have any problems keeping time. They are all pro players who make a living doing what they do.
My post was intended to demonstrate advanced slap technique used by some very good players, for those interested.
I won't throw them to the wolves again. I am done posting here, I hope this forum dies. |

There was nothing wrong with the reply... it was just anothers opinion on the stuff you posted. I didn't reply as I'm not a huge fan of the genre, but felt about the same. I'm a bit fan of substance over flash.
Sorry you feel the need to leave. |

But maybe you have a different idea than me about what an internet forum is for.
I listened to all 5 of your links from start to finish. And then I told you what I liked about some and what I didn't like about others.
Is that not how this works?
I didn't come here to poop on your heroes, but my opinion is sincere. So what if they're pro? Am I not allowed to express a negative opinion on anyone who makes money playing music?
But you need to get a grip. If you're going to quit over 1 post, then just quit. But saying it, and then continuing to post, and throw your weight around makes you seem a lot younger than 33... |

My post was posted in the ROCKABILLY section, thinking it would be enjoyed by people who ACTUALLY PLAY slap double bass and know their ass from a hole in the ground.
Instead, the first thing out of your mouth was a ****ing snooty put down. None of the subsequent slabbers who posted know anything about the genre either. I don't go to your "funky slap and pop 7-string bass" forums and mouth off about how many thumb-slaps per second are being played - because I don't know **** about that style of playing, and don't care either.
The videos were SOLO vids of good players, playing quick demos/instructionals of their slap technique / bass playing - not their actual performances with bands - which makes your comment about their "time keeping" ability just ****ing stupid.
Any one of the guys I posted could play rings around you any single ****ing day of the week, period. - and they get paid to do it.
Go back and read your post again, you really don't think you sound like a total douche? Well you do.
As far as not posting here anymore, I get sick of this horrible, quimby-infested forum full of arrogant geek ***holes all the time, and swear I will never post again, but then I make the mistake of coming back. I don't know why, I hate bass players now because of this place. I don't need your permission to come back for more aggrovation either.
Oh, and if you think that was "throwing my weight around" then you really have no ****ing clue. I was trying to help that guy.

It ain't a race, it's music.
FYI: I may be a 'slabber' but I also play an URB! I have NO reason to steer clear of the 'Rockabilly' section... I do like a few bands that fit the style and I guess I am a fan of the original 'real' rockabilly stuff of the 50s. |

Oh, and if you think that was "throwing my weight around" then you really have no ****ing clue. I was trying to help that guy. | Frankly, I think you have the whole forum wrong. You see it is a bunch of know-it-all-geeks trying to show each other up. But maybe that's just a little insecurity showing (notice how you keep restating your opinion about these players, even though I've never repeated anything negative about their playing).
The fact that people put critical stuff here, is because they care enough not to treat you like an adult, and give you their opinions straight. I've had experts here criticize my posts/ideas, and there are moments when I get insecure, and wonder if they're just shooting me down. But in the end, it's always been someone genuinely interested in helping me improve my idea. And I've learned a lot because of swallowing my pride, and opening my ears.
A perfect example. In the Englehardt thread, you huffed at the OP that no one cared, he should go elsewhere, and then you gave him inaccurate advice. Well there were 3 other posters who cared more than you. They cared enough to give accurate information.
I'm not trying to call you out for it, I'm just pointing out that while you think you have it all figured out, sometimes things aren't as simple as you think.
I already apologized for being rude, but I'll apologize again: I'm sorry for being snooty in my first post. I didn't mean to insult you or bass players that you look up to.
But I won't apologize for my opinion. As I said, I'm not a rockabilly hater, I've in fact been a rockabilly fan since I was about 5. And I gave my props to Pete Turland's playing.
Maybe you're having a bad day, or maybe I just happened to really get under your skin. It happens. But think about your next post. You could just tell me to **** off, and go to your preferred forum, to talk with only people who agree with you 100%, or you could cool your jets, and make nice with some people who see things a little differently than you. (I've always found that the second path is more rewarding).
Cheers,
Oliver |
