Help a Newbie Out?

hi all... I've always wanted to play the upright bass and was hoping maybe someone could help me out.. I just moved from NY to Hawaii and am looking for an upright bass out here. I realize I will pay a ton in shipping costs to get anything to this island and the pickins on craigslist are slim. Can anyone recommend the best way to go to get an upright bass? any good names to look out for? any good resources online to learn how to play? most everyone out here plays ukelele... i want something bigger with more substance... specifically i want to learn how to play slap bass, or something more in line with rockabilly and psychobilly. i am dedicated and will definitely put time into this... just need a kind soul to point me in the right direction... feel free to email me and thanks for your time.
