Nicolas Dubouchet

Great slap player not very well known outside of his native France. (yet!) He has a new Slap technique DVD out, which is where two of these vids are from:

Djordje's new site has more info on the DVD.

How are you judging "great", clacks per second?

Watch the videos again, tap your feet and listen. No offense, but this guy is not maintaining any semblance of a solid rhythm. Doesn't that defeat the whole point of slap bass? It's one thing to give up a little intonation to take on a greater rhythmic role, but to sacrifice rhythm for the sake of click sounds?

HAHA!! Who was that ******* who said that again? I'm not taking my balls and going home this time.

Just trying to catch some of these young slappers before they get eaten by the wolves over here and show them some cool ****, and that slap bass can be taken seriously. This forum isn't exactly "jumpin" over here either.

The new site by Djordje is pretty cool.

I agree with Bass. This guy is a little herky-jerky with his timing. Especially when going into those triplet and 2-against-3 figures he kinda loses it...

On the other hand I appreciate the Louis Vola and Milt Hinton style of slapping here, which is fabulous.

Fabulous!

Bass was just quoting (word for word) some jazz-snob ******* who wondered in here last time I posted, Bass was kidding dude.

If you can play half as good as Debouchet, then you can talk ****. Let me know when your slap bass tutorial vid comes out.

I really don't see how quoting an anonymous "jazz snob" who isn't even here accomplishes anything but divisiveness for the sake of divisiveness.

As far as the "Avalon" link, I enjoyed it. That's better slap than I can play. Sure, there were a few lags, but still pretty durn good from what I heard. The energy was nice. Playing duo at that tempo with a trombone ain't easy.

Hey Gear, would I be the "jazz-snob *******" you are alluding to? Just curious. If it is, I am here.
Thanks.

PS. Maybe it wasn't me because I didn't "wonder", nor did I wander in here. I did come in, on purpose, for a visit with people who play the same instrument that I do.

Alright fellas, "my bad".

I don't consider you to be a snob at all, PW. You are one of the most straight-up cats on this forum and like myself, never candy-coat anything - which I respect. You are the type of dude I'd love to have a beer (or a spliff?) with and shoot the ****. Much respect for your playing - even if I am not much of a be-bop jazz fan. (I love pre-bop jazz and gypsy jazz though)

Bass seems to think posting new cool stuff about slap bass on this forum is a waste of time - since we kinda have our "own" forum over at RABbass.com and now at "the art of slap bass".

I just think it's funny that someone "agreed" with Bass when he was just being facetious. Just goes to show how quick people are to criticize others when they should be practicing.

I will be on my best behavior now, K?

Another reason for my posting of Monsiour Debouchet's vids was to show the younger "billy's" that slap ain't all about Rockabilly - I love slap bass in all it forms.

When else can one man be the entire rhythm section of a band? (and not need a drummer )

Cool, Gear.....
As I said in answer to your nice PM, I was gonna send out My Boyz if you started messin' wif me.

Also, as I said, to me this is all about music and people rather than just the bass fiddle. (altough, that's pretty damn nice too).
Thanks, Pee.

PS. I'll pass on the beer and spliff. We could hang and share a cheap hooker though.

And, if it's anything like jazz, not a very good one either.

1st- There's not doubt the underlying time for the "Avalon" is awkward.
2nd- Your defense of it is also awkward, the guy is a great player but it rubbed me the wrong way how aggressively you attacked anyone who had a different opinion. The other two clips are really masterful!

Now that that is out of the way, I'm personally interested in technique that is more hot jazz & country based and Nickolas is a brilliant modern example of that style. I am in the process of learning to play slap after many years and it's not an easy thing to go from a classical technique to the modern rockabilly style for all of the reasons that create tension and animosity here on TB and on RABB. Most people want to fight about it instead of playing music.

Thanks for the links!

Nicolas Dubouchet is a good slap bass player, you must know that these videos and DVDs were filmed in one day, this may explain the small errors of rhythm!

I think that before too speak, one must understand!

I was just kidding, trying to accomplish a little fun. Gearhead thought it was pretty funny, and so did I. The "original" very hilarious thread is right here.

Check out this great slap player, who very effectively merges classical boogie woogie sound with modern rockabilly technique:
