| Hi Mheintz - thanks for writing. Interesting question - Ludwig Streicher (may he rest in peace) wrote the method books both as a gradual learning and study process as well as a practice suggestion guide. That means that if you are working on a well known solo or an orchestral passage that has technical challenges, you will probably be able to find a practice suggestion in the form of a short two or three line etude in the books Streicher wrote. I can tell you that it is worth your time to take a close look at each etude throughout the volumes Streicher wrote, almost all of which correspond to a well known solo or orchestral excerpt. The books are ordered to increase the positions incorporated in every volume in succession. In terms of suggesting where to begin with regards to ability and skill level, I can only tell you that every player on this planet can always benefit from increasing their control over every inch of the instrument. Therefore, it's not a bad idea to use the volumes to review old challenges and discover new ones.
Many thanks for your excellent question - please write back if you have any more!
Best regards - in the brotherhood of the Bass,
