I want to have a custom 4 string bass made. I have someone to do that already. What I'm wondering is what pick up to use. Active for sure. Something that has a smooth mellow tone but I can slap on too. Does this exist or do I need 2 different basses for this? Thanks

I highly recommend that if you are having a bass built that you check out Ron Blake. He has built 4 basses for me and they are all spectacular. He used to build with Carl Thompson. While with Carl Ron built the necks for Les Claypool's six string and Stanley Clarke's piccolo basses. He does his own thing now. I highly recommend him. I also recommend Kent Armstrong pickups. I have them in all of my basses and love them. Good for fingerstyle funk, slapping, and jazz playing. I have aluminum jazz pickups in the latest bass Ron built for me. They sound great!

Best,
Dave
