"Growl" is a term for a sound that is specifically produced by Jazz basses - although not necessarily Fender.

Jazz bass "growl" was known amongst bassists for many years in the 70s and 80s onwards - it is only recently that "growl" has been adopted as a more generic term - to mean soemthing compltley different!

But if I had said 'growl' in 1976, it would have only had one meaning to a bass guitar player.
