Hi all
Just wanted to say that at first you might have to exaggerate the technique so yes, it is ok to use more than just the NW portion of your thumb. As this gets more comfortable and speed develops you can use less and less "real estate" of your thumb. Of course this is all subjective and you want to do what feels right for you.
Lastly I'd like to add that double thumbing took me a long time to get down so hang in there. It's just something that takes awhile to get use to. Keep thinking of your thumb as a pic and make sure there is no movement, the motion should come from your wrist.
Hope this helps....

It took me a real long time to get it down.
I figured out my mistake was trying to apply the technique i haven't got down to complex licks.
How i finally nailed it was taking it simple, just adding a triplet or something every few measures to a groove. Slowly but surely applied it to more and more of my playing.

Thanks guys for all these tips... I can go up and down fine.... but I am just curious because it doesn't sound at all like a traditional slap. Should I be doing it harder? Maybe the 2 different styles are just supposed to sound different, but my sound sounds almost like using fingers, but I can do it fairly well (I played fingerpicking guitar for 10 years before this). Just wondered though if it is supposed to sound like traditional slapping?

Thanks so much!

The Vic video was the best for me. I'm getting much better and can really start playing around. I'm extremely pleased and now much left hand is having to work harder to keep up.

It was really tough and I thought it would never be as easy as many folks I saw just wailing............I said I just cannot, but then one day, I was trying to sneak by with hammer ons........then accidently started to do it and kept after it.

I just used the thumb and then messed with some scales.
Then started to work in the other 3 fingers slowly.

I had trouble in the lower ranges initially.
This too shall come and it opens up a lot of potential rhythmically. Beat that thumb into submission.

Lighten up and relax and crank up the volume also, that helped.
The upstroke also shall come.
It's still a somewhat new feeling initially.
But run up and down and try to focus a bit on the up and down strokes. Mine like pretty much everyone, was slop and monkey puke initially.
It did not come as fast as the initial feel, took more time to clean it up.

Using it on the lower ranges seemed to help.

I'm trying to get use to different string spacings on a Mod 6 string, vs the 4 strings I'm much more use to. I also wanted to give up here and say I'm just a 4 string player, but with some will, you can do most anything. If I can, I know some of you folks certainly can and really master it. Do not let this devil beat you. It takes longer to get than many think, but it worth the effort. How many players have you met that say, "naw........it took me a long time and it was not really worth it.........."??

None I've seen.

Now if I can just get both parts together for Linus and Lucy
I can die happy. I can play all sorts of tapping routines etc, but that one gets me, that's my devil to beat.

Tom

Try lighter strings for starters.

I got really quickly the thumb-down/up pluck 1 mouvement. Now I incorporeted the pluck 2 in a octave kind of riff.

When I try ti play Classical Thump it just doesn't work at all. I have a hard time going from thumb-down + tap ( 8 notes part ) to thumb-down ( mute )+ tap + thumb up ( triplet part ).
