Learning Slap pedal and bass recomendations needed

Sign in to disble this ad
New to slap bass and Im wondering what basic pedals i need
best i can tell from trying to search stuff on the net is that i need a compressor and or limiter? can you confirm and if so recommend one? Same with bass. Im looking for a decent bass dont want to spend more than 2 grand though ha ha.
I have only played a 4 string but i would be willing to jump to a 5 if it would be a "better" setup

any advice would be welcomed

thanks!

You do not need any pedals for slap bass. Sometimes a compressor/limiter is used but it depends on a persons taste and/or application. I prefer not to use one at all as I feel it "limits" my tone (pardon the pun). The only time I might use a compressor is for recording.
I really recommending getting the desired slap tone you want through hand placement, technique and the EQ of your bass and amp before I'd add any pedal to the mix.
If your budget is 2k for a bass you have many options! Maybe start with seeing what your favorite bass players (sound) play and trying those basses and see what you think. I really suggest playing lot's of different basses and take a mental note of what you like and dislike about various basses ultimately you will narrow it down to something that fits YOU as a player.
As for a 4 or 5, again totally up to you as far a preference. Both are neither harder or easier in my opinion.
Hope this helps.

Lakland Skyline
Modulus Quantum
EBMM Stingray or Sterling
Higher end Ibanez Soundgear
Spector Euro
Zon Sonus

All of these can be had for about $700-1800 used. They are all great basses and handle slap very well. A good idea regardless of bass is to get some lighter strings and put the action as low as it will go.
All of the ones i mentioned have good 5 string versions available or even 6 strings. Since you are just learning slap Id suggest sticking with a 4 because the extra strings can really get in the way for a beginner.
Regardless you'll have fun.

Both are great choices. If thats the style you like also take a look at the Lakland Skyline 44-02. Its very similar and also a great instrument.

For slap I am more comfortable on a 4 w/20 frets; on a 4 there are less *wrong* strings to accidently whack, making for better accuracy- and the shorter 20-fret neck allows me to place my right hand closer to the middle of the speaking length of the strings(subjective, but IMO the string is more responsive to plucking/slapping, etc the closer you can get to the very middle of the length).
I also suggest developing control over relying on a compressor. THAT said, I use a comp 99% of the time...

Edit: Just noticed where this was posted- I am NOT Ray R. Never have been, never will be. Pardon me...
