strumming for dummies

Hey ray
I'm a newbe a little over a year absolutely passionate about playing and learning bass. Simple probably stupid question about strumming multiple strings. Do I strum let's say two strings with the upward movement like the one string pluck? Or downward like a guitar player or does it depend on the notes played and desired sound I'm trying to achieve. When strumming the E and A together I usually strum with the same style as one string. The D and G I strum upward so not to catch the A. Thanks for your time and answer in advance.
