I couldn't imagine using Spiro starks, the orchs are enough of a work out for me. I commend you Chris, yeah the Dominants seem to be calling my name.

String madness, man I need more gigs to support my habit.

I recently installed a set of Pirastro Jazzers on one of my basses. My initial impression is there's no improvement over the Spirocores that I normally use. So far, the Jazzers are at least as scratchy sounding for arco as the Spiros. I suppose I'm a little disappointed, since that is really what I was hoping to improve on.

I have Superflex. on right now and I'm thinking of going to Spiro orch.

I have played on both Spiro's and Superflex on three of my instruments and I've found the Superflex's to be much better with the bow, have slightly less volume but with a more even sound from string to string. (a darker sound also)

That being said, the spiros are louder, brighter and very scrathy with the bow. I've found the E string to be much stronger on the spiro than the super. I prefer the super G. It is a rounder sound, not as nasal as the spiro, and with a little more organic decay.

What do you dislike about the superflex on your instrument?

You could consider what strings in your set you're disliking, and maybe just buy one spiro. ex. if you want a stronger bottom just get the spiro E.

Oh, spiros are also a bit higher tension, which could get a bass with a thick top moving a bit better.

Best of luck,
Chris

Thanks Chris. To me, the Superflex E is a bit whimpy, and the A also is to a lesser degree. I am also on a quest for loudness. I want to be able to play without an amp when possible. I've been raising my strings and really working on pulling as much sound out of the bass as I can. I have a good bass (New Standard LaScala hybrid). It seems to respond better with more tension, judging by the fact that the volume and tone improves as I raise the strings. I'm just looking for all the help I can get with volume.

I like the Superflex D & G. I might try a Spiro orch. E and A and see how they match up.

Thanks again.
