Anima Death Rattle?

I have a question for any of you who have been through the complete life cycle of a set of Animas. I've had my set on for a little over a year and in the last couple of weeks the D and G strings have started to make a buzzing rattle sort of sound. It is loud enough that my wife could notice it 10 feet away. Is this the sound of a dying anima?
Thanks,
John

John

In January, when I put my Animas on, the G string made a sound that I described at the time as a "buzzing rattle" -- not tremendously loud, but audible and of course irritating.

I wrote to Nuno at Velvet Strings and they sent me a new one that does not rattle or buzz. Still does not. (But I also undertook a study of what might cause the rattling sound and read that the angle of the notch in my bass' nut for the G string may also have been at least part of the problem -- in any event, problem solved).

In your case, it seems the buzz-rattle started like out of the blue and must have been the Call of the Dying Anima. The coincidence in the way you described that sound made me think it might also be something about Animas in general...

One other possibility is a popped seam. For some reason, open seams on my bass are much more detectable when the Animas are on... maybe because of the reduced tension on the top? My Animas weren't anywhere near dead after one year. YMMV.

Marcus,
I'll take a closer look for an open seam...but the sound really seems to be centered in the peg box. I was hoping for more than a year from the strings, other than the buzz they really are sounding good. Maybe its a sign from the gods that I should pull the trigger and give guts a try.
Thanks,
John
