I think he uses a combination of old barbed wire and weed-whacker line.
(Just jokes, of course, Sleeper. Riffing on E.M.'s reported penchant for $10 Chinese bows.)

Sure it does. The lower strings are in orchestral tuning and his uppers are solo tuning. It obviously works for him.
