So, Since I live in Europe I figured that it would be better to buy strings made here instead of paying lots of $$ for Gamuts or Dlugoleckis. Aquila in Italy is the most interesting one so far IMO.
Has anyone tried these strings? I'd like to hear some impressions on these. I'm talking about the guts, not the Nylgut strings.

| | | I believe that the fabled nylon covered gut string never materialized from Aquila. Correct me if I'm wrong, because I'd like to try them. Andreas, perhaps you could find out more, since you are closer to Italy than many of us!
I'm waiting for the Golden Spirals (G and D) to become available again.
D'Addario, are you listening? |

D'Addario, are you listening? | Yes, I also read that in the old Aquila Nylgut thread. Mimmo, the maker of Aquila strings, has a talkbass account but he hasn't been active since 2006, but maybe he will read this sometime.
I've been thinking about buying a set of guts in the future (at least 6 months from here) so I would like to hear some impressions of them in the meantime. Europeans? Italians? |

AQUILA UPRIGHT 3/4 BASS SET
THE "THUNDER" SET - Four strings, silver-plated copper wound on multi-strand Nylgut, coupling the sonorities of gut with the durability of synthetic Nylgut. |

| | | | Looks like they custom make gut bass strings, according to the web page....seems like it would be easier on this side of the economic pond (NA) to stick with off the shelf products. |

And again: I have no interest in the Nylguts, and there's already a thread dedicated to them. I would like to learn more about their gut strings. |

Maybe in Europe. I don't know.
Andreas, if they are so affordable, and Aquila is closer in your neck of the woods, why don't you just order some and let us know what you think about them? |

I simply don't have the cash for it yet. But maybe in about two months or so. |

| | | | Thanks Andreas, it would be very helpful. Aquila is a great company, it's just that the products come to the US in limited supply. |

....if i could suggest something you might be interested in .....
for a really good wound gut E and A string , you might like to consider Kuerschner gut strings.I think they are great.
These are hand made in Germany , so that could save you some money , not that expensive.
Like you ,I bought a set of the ARTONES that were up on auction , , and these Kurschner strings are the closet string to the Artones i've tried. Same windings , gauge , feel, tension , sound etc. They really are that good .And they last.
I have tried their plain D and G guts , and while they are good,
they are nowhere as good as Dlugolecki.
So that is what i use atm ,..... Dlugolecki , D G , Kuerschner E A.
Great sound and match up really well.
If your interested , i can tell you they gauge i prefer .
have a look, http://www.kuerschner-saiten.de/english/start.php?spr=e

As much as I would love to, I don't have the money to spend on a set of strings right now. It will have to wait at least a month and a half.
Oscar:
I also got one of those Artone sets that were out on ebay.
The wound strings are really smooth and the round wire is very thin compared to other wound guts I've seen. Does the Kuerschner strings have similar windings? |

For a while i was using Aquila's genuine Silk & Gut range on my 3K classical guitar. Dear god their must be a dozen strings their, forgot all about them. They sound very dark, great if your playing early classical stuff which i'm not currently. No real problems with these strings of the 12 i have, i think i only had one that went pop.
On a completely different subject, i just got a set of Emerson Guts for my double bass, how on earth do you knot them?
