Attaching Gut Strings

I just picked up a couple of (free) gut strings and want to string 'em up. Both are plain gut. What's the way to attach these strings to the tailpiece? The string ends have a loop in the gut, but no metal ball like the steel strings. Sorry if this has been explained before on a post or two. If so, I've had no luck finding it. Thanks!

Congrats to the free guts!

Most guts have both loops and a knot. Most times the knot is enough. But sometimes you need to "loop" it to really secure it. Some gut have only loops. Here's a thread about it.

Loops

You can do it more than one way. Old school like Kent or wood dowel style like Bob's bass.

Because the string takeoff point moves forward using the old way it alters the tuning of the afterlengths, so I used the wood.

Hey Goodgig

Yeah congrats on the guts.

I had the same question when I strung up my Gamuts last year. The knot in the EAD strings was big enough to firmly hold, but I had doubts about the G. So I took one of those round pads Pirastro puts on their strings and slipped the Gamut G through that. And all is well... that "ends" well. Har-har

Be sure to post the results of your gut-experiment in the Gut Strings: Are they worth it to try? thread.

Free Guts

I knew you guys would come through. Ask and you shall receive! My local repairman literally reached down and picked them up off the floor and handed them to me. Thanks for the info. I'll let you know what I think.
