Attaching Guts w/o knots or loops?

Hey, just for fun, I bought some cheap, all plain gut strings from eBay ($100 I think they were, from India) for my bass and they are just straight at the ends - no loops, no knots, no nothin'! SO, how am I gonna get these things on my bass??? The lower strings, especially, seem way too thick to tie knots in them. Seems like something will have to be crimped onto them or ??? Please help if you can, and thanks!

Have you tried soaking a few inches in hot water? I bet you'd then be able to tie a flat knot in the string and put a felt washer on it.

Yep, soak the ends in hot water for a while and then tie a double knot. Let em dry and string them up.

Those Indian guts are kinda, weird, for lack of a better term. They are pretty stiff and inflexible (for guts) but as you play them in they soften up. It can take quite a while, so be patient.
