Bad strings?

I had some work done on my Juzek this week, and had the luthier go ahead and replace the strings ( Helicore Orchestrals). I think that the G string may have gone bad, since it seems to have died already (I just picked the bass up this afternoon).

Is that possible? Is it common? In 35 years of playing electric bass, I've only had one or two strings - out of hundreds of sets - bad out of the box. Fortunately, the luthier has Saturday hours, so I'll call in the morning to see what we can do about it...

Helicore has some QC issues, so yes, it is a common problem.

Well, I took it back to the shop, and yep, a bad string. But Dustin at Williams Fine Violins replaced it in about 3 minutes (dang it, I want a powered winder for my acoustic bass - that was FAST) and the instrument played and sounded great tonight.

Yep, Dustin's a good one. Enough so that I took another bass in for him to work on as I picked the Juzek up.
