I play about 50-50 orchestra and jazz, maybe spend a bit more time practicing the orchestra but about equal rehearsing or performing. I play a Shen SB180 (hybrid).

I started out with Helicore Orchestra Mediums (not bad for either), then moved to separate basses with Flexicore'92 Mediums (with Heavy E) for orchestra and Superflexible Mediums For jazz (both excellent for their separate purposes).

Now I have settled back on one bass with Evah Pirazzi Mediums and I am the most happy I have ever been. I think they work very well for both.

For orchestra music they bow really well and have a rich deep sound, but are not as smooth and mellow as the Flexicores. For jazz accustically they have reasonable sustain, lots of punch, a good fundamental, and they are pretty loud. I had to do a lot of experimenting to get the right sound out of my amp, but I eventually got a sound I can be happy with.

Mediums? I thought they only came in the one gauge.

I'm really happy with mine as well.... as I've stated here ad nauseum...
