Budget Gut Strings, Which Ones?

I am looking into getting some gut strings, just unwound D&G. Gamuts are no where near in my budget, neither are Dlugolecki's as I am just a student. I've been looking at Lenzners, Labella, and the Lemur Music guts. Any thoughts or opinions?

Played the Lenzners and the LaBellas. Both are ok. G's are better than the D's in my experience. D's are kinda "thunk".

In my experience, ditto what Marcus said. Here's an idea. If you lurk around long enough, you may score a great deal on some used Gamuts or Dlugolecki's with plenty of life remaining right here on these very boards. I did. Why not put a WTB ad out in the classifieds for a day or two and see what happens.

Good luck,
Thomas

I was worried about the D string being thumpy and dead, I'm guessing it's of no use in thumb-position then?

Maybe. Depends on the bass, as usual. But my bass sounds good up there with the Gamuts, and it didn't with the cheaper guts.

That's true Marcus, on my school bass (1/2 Size Juzek Flatback) spiro weichs sound about as dark as Helicore Orchestra (crap) on my main bass which is a bright bass. I know that my mileage may vary and everybody's experience will differ I was just looking for some general opinions. I've also been looking at the Lenzner Jazz wound D and plain G. Has anybody tried the Jazz set?

I've had the Clef jazz set on my bass for about a year now (wound e & a, plain d & g). I have been very happy with them so far. They speak well on my bass and are not very expensive, about $260.00 for the full set.

I was continually let down by cheapo guts. It made me switch back to steels.

If I could afford it, Gamuts would be the thing. Then I might make the switch back to guts.

After putting more thought into it, the best way to go for what I need would probably be an Olive G. Does anybody know how an Olive G matches with spiro weichs?

Quite well. I think mittels go best with Olivs on top, but weichs are great too.

The Lenzner's aren't too bad. As mentioned, the cheaper D's can sound worse on some basses, but I've used a Lenzner D and it was OK. A $160 Gamut Pistoy Gut D is the bomb though

I'm on my second set of Lenzner guts - just the D & G this time 'round. They take quite a bit of stretching in. The first set I had, the D was fairly useable once things got going (we're talking months, not weeks).
The pair I'm on now seems to be a bit darker than the first ones - maybe it's my imagination, or my bass has changed somewhat, or maybe there is enough variance in the finish product that one string will differ a fair amount from the next... Hard to say until I play the hell out of these for another few months.
