So, I'm switching from Evah's to Permanents because I like the more focussed sound. Someone recommended to me Spiro Solos at Orch pitch....Which is better, Perm's or Solo Spiro's?

Only way to know is to try them both on your instrument.
There's simply no rule with this.

True. Since you know so much about strings Francois perhaps you could guide me in the right direction. I have an old used set of Permanents that I just put on my 2nd instrument. Not a very good bass, but the Permanents gave this dull instrument the focus it needed to cut through. I really like the sound/tension of Permanents so I'm considering them on my main bass. The last strings I tried on my Gormani were Evah's and I didn't like how high tension they were. Perhaps what I liked less about the high tension factor was how thick the D and G are, it made playing standard orchestral solos quite difficult. I like the fundamental from the Evah's but I find they lack focus on my instrument which is also extremely dark. I don't know if this makes sense or not but when I was still using the Evah's, I dropped the pitch of the open strings down a semi-tone and the entire instrument started vibrating better and it had a louder and fuller tone...Edicson Ruiz said I should try Spiro Solo's tuned down...I'd pretty much do anything that man tells me to.

spiro solos orch pitch

I agree w/ Francois...you really must try them and become an expert! You WILL get all the answers to YOUR questions. One bass "salesman" told me that Berlin Phil never used Spirocore Solos tuned at orch pitch!...maybe you could work at trying a "mix"....start w/ g or D or both...or try to get some used sets....best of luck!

If orchestra Evah's tuned down a semi-tone are great, then maybe you'd be lucky with Evah Weichs?
I have both regular and solo Perms and they're quite different.
The A (B in the solo set) in particular is totally different.

Personnally I find the bottom Perms (A&E) too muddy and undefined, at least in the regular set).
I don't recall exactly what went wrong with the F# tuned at orchestra pitch.
It came off too quickly to remember!

I'd be more inclined toward solo Spiros than solo Perms, but that's just me.

I'm finding this as well. The Permanent E and A are a bit muddy, but the D and G are very focussed and clear...I like this a lot.

I'm considering Spiro Weichs for E and A and Permanents for D and G...Or a full set of Spiro solos at orch pitch.

Someone also mentioned to me Flat-Chrome-steels...I'm a kid in a candy store.

The Flat-Chromes are nice, except the E... (weak, blah...)
They have a very clear tone, although somewhat tense, and are quite thin. (in case you like more meaty strings)

Did you try Helicores?
The Hybrids are interesting, and quite affordable these days.
