The conundrum following replacement of completely dead, terrible Double Bass strings

No one in their right mind would pay money for my old strings, and I would feel guilty about giving them away. They are BAD. I can't believe I let them go so far....

Problem: It seems wrong to just throw them out. What do I do with them?

Art ideas, anyone? Other ideas???

Most people put 'em in a "DSD" (designated string drawer) for emergencies, UNCLETROY moments, and just because it seems a shame to throw 'em away. I keep mine in a briefcase. Heck, I even know one guy who had a garbage bag full of old strings in his closet. It's kind of a rite of passage sorta thing for bass nerds.

Steve Bailey used to have boxes of used strings categorized by type, age, degree of wear, etc.
He used them on sessions when he needed different sounds from a certain bass

I have some strings that are nearly 20 years old in the Bass Draw - most of them are Rotos.

I suppose if I were able to amass a large enough collection of "dead" strings, I could make a bass stool and weave the seat from bass strings; sure would be different to sit on than traditional woven hickory bark!

If I were to undertake such a project, what would the rest of the stool look like? Broken bows for spindles? Necks ornamented with carved scrolls as back legs?

Hmmmmm...

I seem to recall someone having a way to send used strings to Cuban players. It's been a couple of years, I think, since I saw the article in (Bass Player maybe?) a magazine.

You could check to see if any of the Mafioso henchmen are in need of a newer supply of garrottes.

I'd just leave them in a specified place and not do a direct transfer.
