Corelli 370F vs Spirocore mittels

I'll be going to get my first upright soon and I've intended on getting MIttels for quite a while, but I just had the corellis recommended to me. I was told that they would be a little more forgiving for a beginner. Any opinions?

Thanks,
Steve

I'd say just jump on in with the Spiro Mittels.

Yes, they will be more forgiving of poor bowing technique and are much lower tension than mittels, making them easy on the hands. The downside is that they last about a minute and a half. You might get six months out of them. Consider Spiro Weich.

Steve,

If you are primarily bowing, go with Corelli. If you're mainly playing pizz, go with the Spiros.

i love my corelli forte for bowing and pizz. they do both very well, and as far as not lasting long, i totally disagree. initially they can be very bright, but they lose that after a few weeks (or less) and that's where the string really starts to shine and develop its nice tone. my current set has been on over a year, ive had sets in the past on over 2 years.

The Spiro Weichs are a little easier with the bow and depending on your bass, you may not lose anything from the Mittels.

Steve - For your first double bass I would recommend the Corelli's. They are lower tension and therefore easier to play at this stage in your DB life. As you build up stamina you can look into other choices but I feel you will be able to play longer and develop your skills faster without straining. I've had corelli's (370F) on my EUB for over 2 years and I see no need to change them yet, so life span shouldn't be an issue. I did start out with Spiro mittles on my 3/4 acoustic bass and in retrospect I think Spiro weichs or Corelli's would have been better for hands/fingers until I developed my skill a bit.

A friend gave me a used set of Weichs today-wouldn't take any money.
For the last several months, I have had an old set of mitts on and for the last few days, Animas. I have been really frustrated trying to bow either of these strings, especially the A. Weichs on, problem solved. They really are easier to bow, feel great and I don't notice any drop in volume.
The tone is a bit rounder and mellower than the mitts.
I never had Corelli's on this bass, but I remember how incredibly thin they are and how much quieter the bass was with those compared to other strings.
YMMV etc.
