If anyone has some Corellis with some life in them that you'd sell at a used price, please send me a PM. Someday some dealer will start a collection of 'try out' strings and/or start using a spectrum analyzer to 'prescribe' strings for individual basses. Can I get an amen. I have 'outgrown' three kinds of strings on my bass as I get better little by little, now I need something with more coglioni. But my bass won't handle Flexos, it needs higher tension.

Do you mean it needs lower tension strings than Flexocors? I have found Flexocors to be pretty high tension.

fer real, i have to use spiros (so far) to get any decent response out of it. with flexos on it is practically asleep and the response is so slow it's like playing backwards. those are the lowest tension i have tried.

The corellis aren't going to be any higher tension than the flexocores, Are you sure it wasn't jsut the mellowness of the flexocores that you are hearing?

I also have tried the Flat Chromesteels and liked them too. They are indeed a good dual-purpose string, like the Corellis. The Corellis are a bit better for bowing, and the Flat Chromesteels better for jazz pizz. Either way you get a good string, in my experience.

I recently found a good deal on a new set of the Corelli 370M and I am surprised at how much I am liking them. Although the thin diameter took some getting used to, the tension is fine on this bass -- not too loose even using the "medium" gauge. (They are on my King bass which has a 43 1/2" string length and maybe that adds a little tension.) They bow wonderfully and sound great arco, but the pizz is also excellent. The E string is getting the best response and clear pitch that I've ever gotten on this bass. It's funny, even though the strings are thin, I get a fuller sound than when using Obligato or Superflex, and it's much more even throughout the whole range. That, plus the ease of playing them really makes them a pleasure. What a surprise!

I've switched my two bass' setups around and now have the guts on my Strunal. I never completely loved the low end response of the guts on my King and they resonate better on the Stunal. But the King really likes these Corellis. It's a complete 180 degrees on the string diameters when I switch basses though!

+1 on the pitch clarity. I recently installed a set of 370F's from Bob Gollihur on my 2004 carved bass. On this bass, the Corelli pitch centers are much easier to hear on the A and E strings relative to my previous strings (Dominants).

Could you comment on the diameter of the FCS strings? Right now I have Corelli 370TX, 380TX, Jargar Forte, Jargar Forte on E-A-D-G strings, respectively. I really like the combination. The problem is that the diameter of the A string combined with the low tension makes it hard to bow the A without getting some of the adjacent strings. I'd prefer to get another string rather than build up the bridge slot. Are they close to Obligatos in diameter? Or, more of a standard width?

I have been collecting this data for a while now, since the makers don't see fit to print the string sizes on the package! It makes me crazy.

Here are some relevant sizes. The strings were measured OFF the bass, ie unstretched.

Pirastro Flat Chromstahl White with Ruby Spiral
G .048 D .056 A .074 E .098

Corelli 370
Forte G .043, D .055, A .067, E .089

Extra Forte G .044, D .054, A .071, E .096

Hope this helps, Jake

PS I have more numbers if needed. J

Thank you for the prompt and informative reply. Looking at your numbers leads makes me think that I don't have the 380 eXtra Forte gauge A like I had thought. Do you have the numbers for the 380 TXs and the Jargar Fortes? My Corelli A string is actually thinner than the Jargar D.

Call in the string sleuth. ....Francois?

Corelli 380TX gauges:
G: 0.045
D: 0.057
A: 0.078
E: 0.102

Jargar Forte:
G: 0.048
D: 0.061
A: 0.080
E: 0.110

All measured unstretched, like Jake.

Thank you for the reply. It's pretty conclusive. I either don't have the gauge I thought I had or I have a tuned-down D string in the A position.

I put on some old 370Fs (D & G) after my D dominant broke because I had no other string. I got a nice suprise... they sound pretty decent next to my Spiro Stark E & A. Hows that for matching up screwy tensioned strings. It's been a while but I remember them being much brighter. Anyways, the one thing I still don't like is that the D & G have a slight twang to them still. Can anybody give a comparison between the 370F and 370TX in this department? Is it a similar sound but hopefully less twangy.

I have some FCS D&G strings coming in the mail and after reading this thread I hope the results are good.

So I might try 370TX if the FCS doesn't work out with the Starks if you guys think I can get rid of that twang.
