Daddario Orchs - love 'em for pizz

I've tried a bunch of strings on my bass and liked pretty much all of them for different reasons. Some had better playability, some bigger sound but all sounded good. I guess I just like the sound of my bass. I was hesitant to try the Daddario Orchestras due to mixed reviews they've received here but I have to say they are great.

I play mostly jazz and practice regularly with the bow. They don't have the volume of the Velvets I had on before these but they are quite loud. I would say the low end is more controlled and less 'loose' sounding which is one reason I moved away from the velvets - that big low end along with the loose feel of Velvets made them feel slightly sloppy to me. The Dad orchs don't sound thin at all though.

They have a pizz playability similar to spiro weichs but with out twangy metallic upper midrange that spiros get - these sound fatter. They still growl though and have decent sustain - at least on my bass. I thought from descriptions that these might be dead sounding pizz strings but they aren't at all. They have a great arco sound and don't break the bank.

I have only had them on for a month and for me strings usually start to warm up after 2-3 months so I hoping these don't deaden up to a dull thud at that time. If that happens I have an old set of spiros waiting in the wings.

edit: I'm using the medium guage.

I've been using the orchestra Daddarios for six or eight years, also think they're great.I'm trying dominants on my hybrid and varicores on my Jaeger now but am not as sold on either as I was on the Daddarios. As added foolishness I'll probably try Belcantos on one of them.Who needs to retire anyway??!!!good luck with your new strings.

I fell out of love with the orchs.

Yes they turned dull and thuddy after a few months.

I'm back to 4 year old Spiros with a Velvet G. Haven't thought about strings much lately.
