D'Addario Prelude

Hi Everyone
What feedback do you have on Prelude strings? Are they any good? Or is there a reason why they seems to be one of the most affordable strings out there?
See the thing is, down here it is very hard to get DB strings without paying an absolute fortune for them. Getting anything like Obligato, Flexocor, Helicore etc etc will cost me around R2500 - R3500 for a set. That converts to about $357 - $500 per set... I simply don't have that kind of money to spend on strings. The only option I seem to have at this point, is to get the Prelude strings, and that will be around $200... still a lot, yeah I know. I just don't think that trying to carry on using the strings my bass came with from the factory is in my best interest. I find it extremely difficult to get them to speak, and I think they're probably solid steel core. So I need something a little more flexible. Prelude has steel rope cores from what I can see...

Thanks!

They are good strings, but aimed at orchestral playing.
Pizzwise, the tone is very dark and doesn't have much sustain.
FWIW, this retailer ships worldwide, except North Korea, Iran and Cuba.
And his prices are much lower than the numbers you've given.

Why don't you buy a lightly used set of something good in the TB classifieds?

@Francois - thanks, that would suit me then, as I am only concerned about learning Arco at this point.

@Eric - thanks for the advice; problem is shipping though - I am in South Africa, so it becomes expensive.

According to USPS, a one pound package would be a bit over $10.00 to you. Not bad...

My Strunal was strung with Preludes when I first got it. IME - they are very high tension, even for arco strings. The set I have I suppose could be heavy gauge, but even still, there is noticeable curvature added to the neck with them on - something I haven't experienced with any other string on that bass.

I play Preludes in a billy band cause i like the way they react and respond but my hands do get messed up if i do like three or four gigs in a weekend. as i get more serious about playing every weekend im gonna switch to a eurosonic. As for the price and playing arco i loved them.

Cheers

I'm using Preludes and I like them. For my upright with the string height they just work well.
