I emailed him a month or so ago and he said he has switched to Spiro Mittels from the Spiro Starks he used to use.

Danny has recently had to retire his 200+ year old Gand (Parisian luthier), Victoria, from international trips due to changes in airport security. Not sure what he has replaced her with, but he'll continue to record with this bass. It's a gorgeous bass and has such a great depth of voice and sustain.

He uses a David Gage Czech-Ease bass when he can't take Victoria. He's called it Albert.

Air Travel with a bass

There is legislation currently on the table which would standardize air travel fees for musical instruments - at least for domestic travel. I know that even the Czech Ease has been subject to ridiculous charges due to varying rules....

I'm a bit late with this thread but heres my ten pence:
Dannys Gand Bass "Victoria" is around 160-170 years old, not 200+.
He's still using Thomastick Spirocore medium strings but is currently working with the Elites company on a signature set of Double Bass strings that he hope will be in production later this year.

I have to say, Danny's sound comes from a combination of factors. Mainly himself and the time he has put into playing. He played my old German Double Bass in 2008...It sounded like Danny playing Victoria. When I played Victoria, it didn't!

I watched an interview awhile back with Danny, and he mentioned being in shop playing one of their instruments. Someone stopped to listen to him, and started to smile. Danny asked if he was laughing at him due to his lack of technique, and the person said on the contrary they were actually enjoying listening to someone that was trained to play without the aid of an amplifier. That says a lot about his technique.
