Interesting, but this really doesn't tell me anything at all about the strings. I'll look forward to hearing more about these.

Considering he's been using Spirocores for years and is not given to changing things around (he's played Victoria for like 55 years) I am going to take a wild guess and say that they will be remarkably like Spirocores!

Joking aside, Danny's an absolutely wonderful bass player and for us Europeans a heads up that they have released his old VHS instructional 'Bassically Speaking' on DVD at last http://www.dannythompson.bigcartel.c...cally-speaking

Just out of interest I loaned Danny a bass for a tour, maybe 25 years ago, and I recall he had a stash of Lycon strings,
which I believe he preferred over Spiros......

Just bought the DVD. Thanks for the tip. Good Lycon tease.

thanks for the link. Sounds interesting. Really like his sound and playing.

What is that pickup on his bass in that video? Is that an Underwood? and what is that thing in the right f-hole?

Ah cool, wasn't sure they would post to US. In which case, I am going to put up a thread to highlight this for the wider TB double bass audience. I find it a very inspiring DVD, even if it takes a little while to get going (with talk of his piano wire and tea-chest bass!)

The cost for the DVD to the US including shipping is $21 which seems more than fair. Although I'm not familiar with him the DVD looks like a good way to expand my influences.

I just hope its region compatible for you Greg (and any other US based) TB'er. US discs don't generally play on UK DVD players due to different regional formats. Fingers crossed!

Not an Underwood, its a Highlander guitar (not Bass) piezo, fitted into the bridge about 5-10mm under the strings.

As for what his strings sound and play like, I was one of Dannys "Secret shopper testers". He passed the prototype sets out to a good few of us to try and give feedback. I still have the prototypes on my main Bass.
A basic overview: Similar to Spirocore (no surprises there) with that growly low end but a much more even and warmer top end. An easier tension and not as metallic sounding out of the packet, much better with the Bow than Spirocores and better than Helicores when bowed too. Very even sound across all strings bowed or plucked. I've used Spirocores and Helicores on both my Basses for years but I'll be using these from now on.

Update: Danny's signature strings are being made by Elite, not Rotosound (its a complete mistake on all the links). Elites are distributed by the UK's Bass Centre. So I contacted Bass Centre today and they said final packaging is being done and the strings should be released soon, possibly next week
