Dead string?

I am a new owner of an upright bass. I have been playing electric bass guitar for almost 20 years. My new bass is sweet except for one frustrating issue. The A string has a distinct thud. I Barely noticed till I plugged in to an amp and now it drives me nuts. Have no idea how old they are. Might be factory. Is it possible that the string is just bad? All other strings sound great, there are no visible problems w bridge. Does anyone have any suggestions

You could very well be right, no bass string lasts for ever (although it's not uncommon to get 10 years out of a set of Spirocores...)

Post the silk colours, someone should be able to ID them.
