Does anyone use a higher tension G with Spiro Weichs?
 

I really like Spiro Weichs but on both my basses the G tends to be a bit floppy (I've seen other TBers describe the indistinct tone it can produce, especially if I dig in, as "wanging"). There are a zillion threads about matching different Spiro sets with guts/Garbos/you name it but these mainly address finding a tenser E and/or A - I can't see one which specifically addresses mixing a different G only.

So does anyone mix a Spiro Weich E/A/D three-quarter set with a different, tenser G and if so which? For example would a Spiro mittel G do the trick or would it be unbalanced with the other weich strings?

The Spiro Mittel 'G' might work or maybe an OFC 'G' - they're a little stiffer...

I just put on Obligato D&G, with existing Spiro Weich A, and Spiro Mittel extended E.
The Obligato is a bit larger gauge ( it is .055" vs. the Spiro Weich G which is .048"). It is noticeably stiffer and louder,
( which I like and was my intention) - and it doesn't "bottom out" when you dig in. It blends with the Spiro E&A which are about 6 months old. The timbre of the Obligato D&G blend very well with the Spiros - I was concerned that there would be a noticeable difference, but to my ear , they match very well. I'll see how they sound in 6 months.
The only surprise was the 1 week(!) it took for them to stabilize in pitch.
BTW - The Upton Bass website was where I saw this combination offered. They sell a "set" of Spiro Weich E&A/ and Obligato D&G.

:cool:That was my mix for at least ten years,it yielded a less twangy G string sound,which I could never live with. Worked out great for the bow too!
