Hey Martinc . . . I have the same K&K Bass Max pick-up as you, and I very familiar with Obligatos. Let us know how you think the amplified sound of the Dominate Solos compares to that of Obligatos when they were still lively.

Thanks . . .

I really like the feel of this set. I have found it to be pretty uniform across all strings and the do a respectable job of arco also. Prolly wouldn't want to use them if you were playing arco exclusivley but if you go back and forth they are a good set IMO.

Thumbs up Dominant regulars to Dominant solos

I just changed my Dominant D & G for Dominant solo; I was forced to change the G after damage to it started to mark the fingerboard. I liked the Dominants a lot, but wanted a little less tension while I worked through Michael Moore's thumb position book. My hope was that I would retain the fat sound of Dominants on a lighter tension string, and so far I think that this is the case.

The tension/stiffness of the solos, tuned to orch pitch, is similar to Spiro weichs (the regular Dominants compare to the Spiro orchs). I may have lost a teeny bit of volume, but that actually helps balance the weaker bottom end on my bass, and have retained the fat tone - more than I expected, actually.

The tuning stabilised quickly, and the sound is still mellowing out - this can take a month or more to fully mature, from my experience with the regular Dominants. I played a loud gig on Saturday; Latin Jazz with a percussion section and loud piano and horns, and the solos didn't flinch when I dug in hard to help with the volume. That was something I was woried about.

I have a regular Dominant A still, which I will likely change to solo, and my trusty Spiro mittel/red E is still going strong.

So for those wanting to try the Dominants, but at a lower tension, these may well work out - the tension is not at all floppy, it brings the otherwise high tension Dominants down to a more normal (Spiro weich) level.

Hi,fitted a medium set of dominants to my German 3/4 laminate...done a lot of string comparison in my short time with the upright(2 years),30+years on the electric "slab", they're the loudest strings I've found played with or without amplification, doin the rocknroll thing,so my style through necessity is fast pizzicato..I find the resistance and the strings ability to return to its starting point in a hurry, combined with a gut like thump and remaining articulate in the upper register, just what I've been looking for..And whatd'ya know?Dragged a bow across the strings (didnt have a clue what I was doing)and got a healthy "burp" out of her,not the usual "screeaachh!!"..Yikes!Stood on the cats tail!Got a 4 hour gig of 2 minute wonders 9pm sat night,on after a Elvis impersonator, yep, got im in kiwi land too..gonna be a long night..Give ya-all feed back, hopefully lack of feed back on the dominants...see-u!!
