Dominant regulars to Dominant solos I just changed my Dominant D & G for Dominant solo; I was forced to change the G after damage to it started to mark the fingerboard. I liked the Dominants a lot, but wanted a little less tension while I worked through Michael Moore's thumb position book. My hope was that I would retain the fat sound of Dominants on a lighter tension string, and so far I think that this is the case.
The tension/stiffness of the solos, tuned to orch pitch, is similar to Spiro weichs (the regular Dominants compare to the Spiro orchs). I may have lost a teeny bit of volume, but that actually helps balance the weaker bottom end on my bass, and have retained the fat tone - more than I expected, actually.
The tuning stabilised quickly, and the sound is still mellowing out - this can take a month or more to fully mature, from my experience with the regular Dominants. I played a loud gig on Saturday; Latin Jazz with a percussion section and loud piano and horns, and the solos didn't flinch when I dug in hard to help with the volume. That was something I was woried about.
I have a regular Dominant A still, which I will likely change to solo, and my trusty Spiro mittel/red E is still going strong.
So for those wanting to try the Dominants, but at a lower tension, these may well work out - the tension is not at all floppy, it brings the otherwise high tension Dominants down to a more normal (Spiro weich) level. |
