Dominants v D'Addario v Obligatos

Ok, so I have a 2001 Christopher 300 series bass, 7/8 body, 3/4 scale (42"), 5 string. Spruce top, plywood back + sides, you get the idea. I have some older Hybrids on it now which do OK except the B string is orchestral gauge which is too dark and unfocused for pizz.

I majored on classical bass whilst playing jazz bass in college, everyone does this and I did too. I've played electric bass professionally for 8 years now and play the upright not for gigs but for a big band thats for the fun of it and that's all it will ever be. I love jazz but I love making rent way more right now. So I need new strings, so why not ask people who've never hear me play, never seen the bass and I have no idea what they're experience is...

I have always used thomastik dominants on my old bass (before this one). Someone gave me a set of D'Addario Hybrids used for this bass. I like them say 7 of 10. I played a bass with I think was Pirastro Obligatos that I really liked. A bit thinner gauge, more defined note. This was on an expensive bass too.

My bass is 7/8 body, so has more woof to it than most basses. I'd like a more, um, electric sound out of it than the Paul Chambers thing. The bass has no problem moving air, I need more George Mraz than Mingus. I know the bass has a LOT to do with it but any help would be appreciated. Keep in mind though that this is a FIVE sting and I'd much rather buy one set than split up between two types (D & G this, A, E & B this).

thanx

IŽll give you a reply without knowing your bass, dominants or dŽaddarios ; )
I always thought obligatos are more towards mingus than mraz, more chambers than electric..

I guess the most electric sounding string I know is spriro, or the pirastro jazzer, but IŽd prefer the spiro, thoug I only know the "mittel" and they were a pain on the left hand for me.
but then again I donŽt know that many strings it seems.
the belcantos I am playing now wonŽt be satisfying for you I guess.

the spiro you can play for a long time, this will save on the rent, too. obligatos will die in a +/- year, at leas if I play them.

yeah, I've been looking at what's available in a 5 string set (or buy the 5th string). Hybrids in a medium gauge are sticking out right now. The B on there now is an Orchestral medium and it's plain dead sounding pizz. Decent for arco but I don't really play much arco these days. I'm prolly gonna take a trip to hammond ashley in a couple days and try out some basses with different strings before I buy.
