AFAIK, Spirocore bottom, and solo Flexocor top.

Original Flexocors are not available in solo-tuning, but original FlatChromes are.
I think it's the solo Flexocor '92 he uses.

Read somewhere he tunes EAEA.
I'm not sure though!

I heard that it as EBEA, and with a couple of flubs that he made on student basses at a master class I saw a few years ago, it looked like he was used to a 5th between the 4th and 3rd string.

I've been running Original Flexocors on D and G and Spirocores on the E and A. Not a bad paring, but the bow on the Flexocor G is pretty bright. How are the '92's different?

The '92 G is quite warmer. It also has less volume and sustain though!
Did you try the rubber ring filter with the Original Flex G?
Cuts brightness a lot. (but also volume and sustain...)

They came with felt washers at the ball end and I left both of them on (D & G).

I liked the Spirocore Solos, but that instead of digging in with the bow and exploring possible sounds on the G (and the D to some extent) I found myself trying to back off and get toward the fingerboard to try to lose the high-end grit.

I'm talking of the black rubber ring filter that's included in every Pirastro steel G string's envelope.

No.This is a tube, not a ring.
The rubber ring filter is shaped like a thick flat washer, about 5/8" diameter, about 3/32" thick. The center hole is about 1/4" diameter. Look inside your Pirastro steel G pouch.

Sorry -- was running a Quebecois check, I'm a little embarrassed to admit. Most of my friends are not native English speakers, so it's just habit

Nope. I didn't see the washer, and if it was there it's long gone now.

Forgive me, but I'm not sure what you're talking about exactly.
I'm a québécois, and french is my native language.
Did I miss some kind of joke?

Naw-- just making sure that a 'washer' and a 'piece of tubing' didn't get munched between French and English. Like I said, it was just a involuntary response to hanging with so many ESL'ers. (ESL=English as a second language -- a popular course for new-comers to the States)

Thanks! I'd be interested in seeing what it does. The G is also a little hard to control -- really easy to lose the string and get a squeak/scratch that'll take the shine offa my glasses. You think that the washer would chill this out a bit?

I'll include a xerox of an old Flexocor string pouch.
On the back, there's a drawing showing how to use it.
