Eminence and Velvets

I posted on the EUB thread, but it doesn't seem to get much action. My main question is about Velvet strings and the Eminence brass tailpiece. Because the Velvets don't use a ball end, the core touches the tailpiece at several locations. On a wood tp I smoothed the edges before installing the Velvet strings. Has anyone used Velvets on the Eminence, and did you encounter any problems with abrasion or fraying? I have an almost new set of Animas I would like to try, but I don't want to ruin them. Any help would be appreciated.

George

I can't help you much except to say that I have a friend who uses Velvet Garbos on his Eminence bass, and I don't think that he's had any problems. It's been his touring bass for a few years. I played it once, and it sounded great.

Marcus, I'm curious about your friend with the Eminence and Garbos. Does he frequently have to remove the neck of that bass, and how do those strings hold up to being taken off and put back on frequently? I always assumed that you'd likely need to use steels, for many times I've run into winding separation problems when repeatedly restringing synthetic core strings, Velvets, Obligatos and Olive/Eudoxa, etc.

Yes, he uses the removable neck model. I'm not sure how much he actually flies with it these days, but he didn't mention any problems with the Garbo's longevity. He did say that he didn't really care for the sound of the Eminence until he replaced the Spiros with the Velvets.

i use the velvet animas with a marvin tailpiece. he kindly included small patches of leather to put between the circles that attach the string to the tailpiece. something similar may be helpful to you. i'm surprised anyone would want a string like this for an eub bass though.

Actually, Gary(Eminence) says Velvet Garbos are fantastic on the Eminence.
