Eudoxa's v Evah's (low tension) - help!

All,

Help please!

I have a set of Pirastro Eudoxa's on my english Paul Bryant Panormo (made in 2005). I've had them on for about 12 months now. The problem is, is that they keep losing thier pitch badly and seem very senstitive to temperature changes.

Example; the stage doors were opened during the interval at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester UK - I had a nightmare tuning again for the 2nd half! could the cooler air have really affected the tuning by at least a semitone?

The problem may be enhanced because I had them taken off and refitted when I had some new machine heads fitted?

Can you refit top class gut strings like this and expect them to perform as new?

I've ordered a set of low tension (soft) orchestral Evah's and hope that they will produce good sound and retain their tuning frequency.

Any ideas, experiences etc would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds about right. I abandoned Eudoxas for that very reason. I went back to Spiros for a while and have since put Evahs on my bass and am really pleased. I think you'll like 'em just fine.

Thanks 'Fingers', I hope that your view is the general opinion.

Count me in agreement. The Evahs will stretch like crazy for a day or so then settle in and be fairly stable. Not as stable as Spiros but nothing like guts (wrapped or not).

Gut strings -- even gut wrapped in metal -- will always be more pitchy than non-gut strings. Common knowledge AFAIK.

Barnsey -- How long were they on your bass from the time of having the new machine heads fitted?

I used Eudoxa for many years. I had surprises sometimes when first tuning up after unpacking, but never anything like the trouble you describe. I don't remember ever re-stringing one. That could be a problem, I suppose. I always used "stark" gauge btw. Also, I oiled them regularly.

They were probably on for about 6 months.

Cheers!
