Question Fifth String?

How is the double bass fifth string... 'connected'... 'applied'?
And how is it used? I've seen performers flicking something up the top while using a fifth string. Random habit or essential?

Cheers!

You mean flicking the B or C extensions? These are the mechanical fingers.

So, if the player is working with machinery up at the top of the bass, that's actually a four string instrument with an extra long lowest string, and mechanical keywork to give the reach.

Five string basses are just played like a four string, nothing obviously different happens.
