Flexicores

Sorry to bring this up again, but I can't seem to quite find the answer, even though I know it's out there.

Flexicores vs Original Flexicores?

Which ones do we refer to as '92s? I know neither of them is actually called that.

How do the two compare?

Thanks,

Troy

"Flexocor" is the '92 variety - "original Flexocor" are the older ones.

The 92s are a bit brighter, thinner and lower in tension than the originals. The 92s come in three gauges, light, medium and heavy - the "originals" are only available in one gauge. You can tell them apart by the thread at the tailpiece end - originals are purple and 92s are ruby, I believe.

Perfect, thanks. I've got a '92 medium G string on my bass now and a D in my bag. I like it, but may try going up to Stark. Started looking at ordering and got confused.

Chris
For the bottom strings I agree, but for the top ones, the '92s are darker and stiffer I think.

So you think the originals are brighter than the 92's? (D and G)

I'm surprised at how much sustain there is in the 92. It's probably not bright, but I've got it on there with Jazzers and in contrast, it's not that far off of what I would have designed the Jazzer G to sound like. Certainly less twangy, but not entirely different (until you pull the bow across it, if course)

The Original G has even more.
It's much more singing.
The Original D is less different though, but to me it has more clarity and life.

I agree with francois thus far. I find the Originals to be much more balanced overall for orchestral playing. The G is almost too free, and I have taken to using the rubber "tone ring" supplied with the set.
