Full scale strings?

I have recently bought my first upright bass, a full scale DeVilli from a manufacturer selling on ebay, it came with two sets of strings that I could not get to keep, The first set snapped as I was trying to tune them and the second set pulled the tail piece apart. there is obviously too much tension, Im not sure if maybe they sent me 3/4 scale strings and I need to get full size?

Any info?

What you suggest is extremely unlikely. As in - it is extremely unlikely you have a bass too big for normal strings.

It's more likely - although we can only really guess - that the bass needs a proper set-up, or if it was a very cheap bass then you might have 'problems' - have a look at the newbie links on DBs !

Bring that instrument and the strings to a qualified luthier for examination.
There's something wrong!
The difference in tension between 3/4 and 4/4 size strings on the same instrument is quite small, actually. It has nothing to do with this issue.
