funky D string? on a kay!

i recently purchased a 1939 KAY.. and the body is in really good shape.. but the neck looks as if some tiger got a hold of it!! lol.. but plays well!! i put on my obligato's but i get a deadened sound on my D string.(notes).. all the other strings(E A G) have a good resonation to them when holdin notes.. but the D's notes just dont last at all! very short like they are being vamped or something! any thoughts about what would cause this.. would be appreciated!!

You probably would do fine by taking it for a visit to a real bass doctor. My first thing would be to try and adjust the position of the soundpost...that's what the Dr. is for, unless you have good knowledge of these procedures.

I don't know where you are, so I can't recommend anyone.

reply to M ramsey

well thanx M ramsey.. i was kindof wondering about soundpost! it was out when i picked it up. and tried to place it back in orig spot.. it looked like there was two placement spots on back soundpost pad. and i tried to match it like my engelhardt. but i think i will definately have someone readjust it for sure! i'm in san diego . there is a couple of shops somewhat close.. thanx for your insight.

Its funny that its the D string. I just recently realized that in my experience Kay's usually have a really killin D string and all the rest are soso. The D strings usually get the cannon sound.

yeah i hear ya. my engelhardt's D string is that way. rattles my living room and the other strings are kindof blaah. but i played at a jam the other night, outside, and it didnt seem as bad. i was wondering if the string is to low, close to fingerboard?
